“We have all had the sensation of drowning in a sea of information — the challenge we face is to learn to swim in that sea, rather than drown in it.”, Peter Lyman.
The Internet is one of the youngest and fastest growing media in today’s world. In the Internet, People produce a huge amount of information with texts, images and sounds, etc. While we use the Internet more often, consuming information becomes lots of work to our life.
Exploring a huge amount of images form the Interenrt and exhibiting them physically are the ways that I represent the universal, complex and virtual ideas of the Net Culture. What do we interact with such intensive information when related images juxtapose together? Do huge information create a new meaning of a subject and bring us different understanding about the world? These are interesting transformation of the relationship between information and culture.
What we see is “not” necessarily what we believe. To perceive and to think about information is the main issue that I concerned in this project. Images as information come from many different intentions and they represent wide aspects of the Internet culture. In the future, the fast growing information will also change the way of our perception.

Description of work
This work is titled: “ The Sea of Information”.
The artwork, “The Sea of Information” by Chia Sheng Tai, is a reflection on our digital era and the overwhelming abundance of data that defines it. Here are the key ideas behind the piece:
The work examines how the Internet has rapidly become one of the most influential media, flooding our lives with images, texts, and sounds. It captures the paradox of being surrounded by information—suggesting that while we often feel “drowned” in this sea of data, the challenge is learning how to navigate and make sense of it.
By searching for and collecting thousands of images related to everyday subjects (such as TV, Family, Food, Gender, War, and more), the project documents how digital culture creates layers of meaning. Each subject, represented by over 300 images, contributes to a broader conversation about how the Internet’s vast repository of visual material reshapes our perceptions of familiar themes.
Physically displayed in a gallery, the images are printed as 4” x 6” photographs and arranged to mimic a computer hard drive. This setup not only creates a tangible experience of browsing through digital information but also invites interaction. Viewers can engage with the artwork by clicking on images to trace them back to their original online sources, thus blurring the lines between passive observation and active digital research.
At its core, the work questions the relationship between what we see and what we believe. It suggests that the vast amount of information available can alter our understanding of reality—challenging us to rethink how we process, trust, and interact with the digital content that saturates our lives.
Overall, “The Sea of Information” is both a commentary on the exponential growth of net culture and a call to re-evaluate our engagement with the digital world, emphasizing that our perception of information is shaped as much by its presentation as by its inherent content.
